Health Testing


Please read the following information


My aim is to produce healthy, sound, unaffected puppies for a quality life.

Not all diseases have modes of inheritance, nor do all diseases have screening tests. Some are based on phenotypic evaluation, others on genetic testing.

I have all me dog's Hip and Elbowed X-rayed and Scored and DNA tested for PRA, EIC and CNM.


The results which can determine the genotype, the results can  be either of  the following:

Clear (A) Carrier (B)  Affected (C)


CLEAR (A)-  they will never develop this disease 

When both parents are CLEAR they will have 100% CLEAR pups.

CARRIER (B)- they will never develop this disease

A CARRIER should only be mated to a CLEAR. This means statistically 50% of the litter maybe CLEAR and 50% CARRIERS. Testing is required of the pups. Only CLEAR pups should be selected for potential breeding and CARRIERS for pets.

AFFECTED (C) - will develop disease

What is Hip/Elbow Dysplasia?


HD is a crippling congenital malformation that is caused when the ball of the thighbone does not fit properly into the socket of the hip joint.

Dogs should be X-rayed and evaluated for the condition before considered for breeding. It is recommened that your dog should have a score less than 12.13 to be used for breeding. The Radiology practice will give you a score for the left and right side that gives you a total.

Elbows are also graded between 0-3. Only scores of 0-1 should be considered for breeding. In both cases the lower the number the better.

Obesity and over exercise at a young age can increase the severity of the disease.


 Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

PRA refers to a group of inherited disease that cause loss of sight.  Progressive Rod Cone Degenration ( PRCD ) is a the only form of PRA disease known.

Exercise Induce Collapse (EIC)

Some Affected Labradors with EIC may seem to become weak in the rear limbs and may collapse after strenuous exercise.  Some dogs may just show signs of collapse sporadically. EIC has known to be fatal.

 Centronuclear Myopathy (CNM)

Affected  puppies  have significant weight loss . At one month of age, the absence of tendon reflexes . The age of onset of the disabling  varies between 2 to 5 months, with an awkward hopping gait and a decreased exercise tolerance and generalized muscle weakness. The pup will never recover from this disabling disease. ( This is not EIC)
